Naka-Taka-Chinko
by The Mad Arab (gable@redrose.net)
The naka-taka-chinko is a leathery, winged creature similar to the gargoyle, a creature all too familiar to Seattle runners. Most parabiologists agree, however, that the NTC (as it is known in the scientific community) is probably an Awakened form of bat. The naka-taka-chinko has a batlike face and ears. The males have a black, leathery skin while females are covered in a short, downy, brown-red fur. Naka-taka-chinko dwell in desert caverns (sometimes cooperating with ohdowa to defeat a common foe). Females usually stay in the lair, while the males venture forth during both day and night. Naka-taka-chinko usually will not attack creatures as large as a human, usually feeding on small desert rodents and birds.
The naka-taka-chinko has the ability to speak, usually only in their own tongue. They can, however, learn the most common human language spoken near their lairs. Certain elves (those few that live in its home range) know the creature as an afterling. Naka-taka-chinko are capable of using magic, and they usually follow the shamanistic path. Their favored totem is Bat.
Other Names: Believed to be the creature known to the Maya Indians as camazotz, thought to be the personification of death.
